Ugh I hate the cold, I swear I must get it at least three times a year! The worst thing about it is that even in 2014 or 2032, if you are reading this in the future, there is no simple over the counter cure for the cold. Heck I bet you guys in the future will have flying cars, bases on the moon and intergalactic travel before we have a tablet that can make the common cold go away. But still there are things that can at least make you not want to curl up into a ball and die when you have the cold and here are a few ways to help you get through…the common cold!
Blow Your Nose
One of the worst things you can do when you have a cold is rather than blowing out all the yucky stuff from your nose. You suck it all back up! As well as making a horrible and disgusting noise when you do this, it can make you get even more bunged up and give you a bad headache. Blow your nose properly with one finger over one nostril and, well you know the rest, no need to get to graphic here is there? 😀
I know that more often than not when you have a cold you still have to take the kids to school, go to work, clean the house, make dinner and in general make sure everyone else’s life is still running fine. But studies have shown that rest is actually one of the best ways to fight of a common cold as when you are laying under a blanket covered in used tissues, watching day time TV, your body is using all its energy to fighting off the cold! So take the kids to school, but leave any housework or non-essential shopping until another day.
Gargle Salt Water
Now for me the worst part about a cold is the sore throat. It can feel like you have buzz saws back there every time you swallow! It was actually my grandmother who recommended that I put a table spoon of salt in a glass of water and gargle it. Yes grandma, I will do that right away I said. Of course I did not, that was disgusting. But one year I had a really sore throat. At my wits end I dumped a bunch of salt in a glass ran the tap and swigged that glass back and gargled the theme tune to Gremlins. And you know what? I hand on heart pretty much instantly got relief. Now when I have a cold or feel one coming on, gargling salt water is the first thing I do. I know it tastes just god awful, but the best advice I can give is to just chuck back and try to avoid your tongue as much as possible.
Hot Lemon Tea
You can get actually hot drinks that are designed for fighting off colds, but I have never found one that I like the taste of, so I just have good old fashioned lemon tea to help me feel a little better. The hot drink can help give you a little relief from your nasal congestion and it also helps you out by keeping you hydrated as well. Now this is not a total cure and you will be congested a little later, but oh my goodness are those first few minutes you can breathe slightly more easily through your nose just pure bliss!
