I have said it before, but I was addicted to diet soda. My “poison” was Diet Coke, the amount that I would drink in a week now when I look back was just disgusting! When I decided to get serious about losing weight and changing the way I eat to be more healthy I knew that the hardest challenge I was going to have was saying good bye to diet soda. But I have managed it and while on a rare occasion I will have the odd can of diet soda as a treat, I can go weeks and months now without a can of diet soda. And today after reading this your new diet soda free life starts!
Have A Reason To Want To Stop Drinking Diet Soda!
It’s all well and good to randomly say you are no longer going to drink diet soda, but if you do not have an actual reason then you will find it so much harder to stick to it. Have an actual reason as to why you are wanting to kick diet soda to the curb. Do you want to lose weight? Have you managed to stop eating junk food and only diet soda remains as your main vice? Maybe there is an ingredient like sugar, caffeine, high fructose corn syrup or whatever that you no longer want to put into your body. If you have a reason then you will be more likely to stick to it.
Know What You Are Going To Drink Instead
Ok so you have decided that no more diet soda for you, you have given all your soda to your neighbors and now you have nothing to drink! Have a few substitutes in mind in regards to what it is you are going to drink before you do this. These days I am a water baby and a nice glass of water is my choice when it comes to a drink. But when I first ditched soda I would have regular OJ, diluting juice and a whole bunch of other stuff as I tried to find something else to drink instead of soda. The best advice I can give is find a couple of things. Water is best, but it can be very hard in the early days to go from soda straight to water so maybe some healthy, natural OJ is a good in between.
If You Find It Hard Do Not Quit Cold Turkey
I made the mistake of trying to just quit diet soda cold turkey. While some people can do this, I could not. And within a few days I was back to my old ways. What I did when I tried again was allow myself one glass of diet soda per day. Then every couple of days and then just on weekends and then I went a whole week without it and then the cycle was broken. I know how hard it is to give up something you love so do not give yourself a hard time if you can’t just stop overnight. It took me a few weeks to really stop.
Read Why Diet Soda Is So Bad For You!
Maybe shock treatment will work. I will not list all the terrible things that diet soda can do to your body, but once you see the damage diet soda can do to things like a tooth, your toilet and other things. You start to wonder what it does to your insides!
You Can Still Enjoy Diet Soda
Wait isn’t this about quitting diet soda? Well yes it is, but I have found now that I have my diet soda addiction in my back pocket and I am at a point where every once and a while if we are at a McDonalds or whatever then I will allow myself to have a diet soda along with my already unhealthy meal. Once you get to the point when you can have a random diet soda in moderation you have won the battle! If you are having a cheat day on your healthy eating then a diet soda is ok every now and again in my book.
