I used to laugh when I would watch a TV show or a movie when a family would be travelling and the kids would be yelling “are we there yet”, but once you have kids of your own you know that really there is nothing funny about that at all! Let’s not kid ourselves, long journeys be it in the car, plane boat, bus, rocket or whatever with the kids can be brutal with a capitol B. But today I want to give you a few tips that take make travelling with the kids just a little bit easier and stop you from becoming a blood shocked eyed screaming maniac!
Plan The Time Of The Journey
When I was a kid living in Scotland we would often visit family in the South of England. This was an 8 hour drive! To make it easier we would drive through the night. The reason for this was that me and my sister would sleep the majority of the way. If you travel when it’s their normal sleep time then they are far more likely to sleep for the majority of the journey. I know that if you are flying or using some other kind of public transport then you may not have much control. But even now with my own kids, if I have to travel more than 8 hours, I try to do it at night. Hey I will take my boys snoring over them complaining that one is touching the others leg any day!
Have Entertainment During Trip
It’s so much easier to keep entertained these days on a long flight or drive to get good entertainment for the kids. Things like a portable DVD player can be bought for next to nothing these days. Or you can put some movies onto your phone, buy a cheap tablet just have some kind of electronic device to keep them occupied. Even things like books and maybe a toy is a way to keep them happy for a little while. In the car though you really cannot beat a portable DVD player as you can plug it into the car so there is never any worry about it running out of batteries. I do not care what you use to entertain them, just for the love of god do not get on a 10 hour flight with nothing for them to do!
Hey There Is Always Bribery
I know that some parent books are dead set against bribery, but I bet those people who wrote them did not have to drive for 10 hours with kids in the back of the car! If you two do not fight then you can each get a new Transformer was a bribe I used on my two boys on a recent family trip and it worked like a charm. Any time they started bickering with each other, I would remind them that there would be no new Transformers if they did not keep to their own side of the car or if Billy did not stop sticking his tongue out or if they did not stop looking at each other! It does not have to be Transformers, just bribe them with whatever it is they like. Hey I am not saying that bribery is the right thing to do, but it works!
