When I was in the let’s just say corporate world I hated, let me say that again I hated the whole office politics thing that was going on. I had heard of office politics before, but until you have actually worked in an environment where people will do anything to get ahead and hold you down you really do not understand what it’s like. I had no interest in playing office politics, but at the same time I was not going to be screwed over or in fact screw other people over. So today I want to share with you a few tips and suggestions for not letting office politics get to you and how to deal with them.
Dealing With Office Politics : Be Friendly & Peaceful
Now not for one minute am I saying that you should let people walk all over you. Nor am I saying that you should be brown nosing all the people at work. But being polite and friendly, just offering a simple hello or a how was the weekend or maybe how are the kids, is a nice way to keep on peoples good sides without being seen as a suck up or a threat to them. Just try to get along with people as best as possible.
Dealing With Office Politics : Do Not Be A Blabber Mouth
“Oh so and so told me this”, “ you will never guess what is happening with the boss” and other types of office gossip. It can be so easy to get sucked into this water cooler culture where people stand around telling each other’s personal business. If a work colleague tells you something then do not go and repeat it to someone else. Trust me it will get back to them that you did and then you have an awkward work environment, and the possibility of them telling others at your work that you cannot be trusted.
Be Helpful To Your Work Colleagues
One of the best ways to get ahead without getting sucked into the whole office politics thing is to be helpful. Do not be a doormat for people, but offering someone a ride who lives close to you. Maybe asking is someone wants a coffee as you are on your way to get one. Just little helpful things can go a long way to making your work day that much easier, happier and have less work place drama in it!
Never Get Sucked Into Bad Mouthing The Boss
No matter where you work there is also one little stooge who will go running to the boss telling them what is going on. It can be so easy to vent and say that your boss is a jerk to your co-workers. Even if your boss is the biggest jerk in the world then do not say it to people at work. Vent when you get home to friends and family who will not go and rat you out to the boss. The problem with this is that if your co-workers are having a major run the boss down session in the break room and you do not join in, it can make you seem like you are not one of them. The best thing to do is try and casually change the subject to a movie, TV show or whatever.
Dealing With Office Politics : Be A Straight Shooter
The best way by a mile to avoid the whole circus that is office politics is to be as straight as an arrow. After a while people will realize that you have no interest in office gossip and getting ahead by messing with others. By doing what you are saying you are going to do, telling people when there are problems and owning up to any thing you do wrong, you will be surprised at how you are more respected by people when you do not play these work based games!
Dealing With Office Politics : Forget About It All At 5:30!
The best way to deal with office politics and things going on at work is at 5:30 or whenever it is you are done for the day, switch off from work. That is that, what has happened has happened, what Lisa said in the break room does not matter! When you clock off, leave it all behind in the office and enjoy your own time, without giving work a second thought!
