Hollywood these days loves to remake movies of the 80’s. Call it a lack of new ideas, lazy filmmaking or whatever. But Hollywood is certainly looking to the past for ideas for movies. We have already had many remakes or reboots, but today I want to share with you a few movies which I am surprised have not been remade… yet.
Made by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, The Dark Crystal tells the story of a young Gelfling who needs to find a missing piece of a crystal to restore his world. It was a fantastic fantasy movie that had some amazing puppets that only Jim Henson could have done. There has been talk of a sequel or nearly a decade, but so far nothing has come of it. Of course if a sequel were to be made the chances of it being made with puppets is pretty much slim to none, but The Dark Crystal was a great movie and maybe reboot would work in bringing it to a new generation.
A true classic of the 80’s sees little cutie Mogwai Gizmo get wet and in turn lead to the small town being taken over by mischievous Gremlins. Gremlins is just such a great movie and when a movie that is from the 80’s has aged as well as Gremlins has. I do question if a remake is even needed. But this is Hollywood we are talking about! A new Gremlins movie has been rumored for years, but with how popular the series is, it really is pretty surprising it has not happened by now. Gremlins is a movie that I do not think needs a remake, but I am very surprised it has not been done.
What a cool concept this was! You have a group of kids in a small town who need to stop Dracula and his classic monsters such as the Wolfman from taking over the world! This is a fun horror movie that is made for kids and something that has not been done really since! I am sure that a new Monster Squad movie would be a huge hit and it would also be a great way of introducing a new generation of kids to the classic movie monsters.
WHAT!!!!! Is what I am sure many of you are saying. But I am not saying for one minute that I think the movie Grease needs remaking. I mean it’s a timeless classic that is still as good today as it was in 78. But at the same time I am very amazed that Hollywood has not wanted to modernize the movie with todays “cool” teenage stars. While a remake of Grease would not appeal to those of us who grew up with the original, I am sure with a cool cast of today’s popular stars it would be a big hit.
Tim Burton’s comedy of the ghost, Beetlejuice trying to get people out of Alec Baldwin and Gena Davis’s house was a huge hit and is still a cult favorite to this day. Again a remake is not really necessary and perhaps because Tim Burton is so protective of his work is why this has not been done. But a CGI heavy remake of Beetlejuice is surely something that has been considered at some point.
