One of the most important things I take into the gym with me is my old iPod. My kids are “embarrassed” by my 2006 iPod classic, but I do not care I have over 50gb of music on here and it’s a very important part of my work out. Sometimes you need a little pick me up half way through a work out and god knows the garbage most gyms play won’t do it. So that is why you need your own music to help you get going and power through your work out. Here are my top reasons why you need to have your own music when you work out.
Music Can Serve As A Good Distraction
There can be nothing worse that feeling like you have been running for a good five minutes on the treadmill and then looking down to see not even a minute has past. Listening to some pumping tunes is a great way to take your mind off your cardio. My weakness for example is the treadmill, I know it’s good for me, but I find it boring as hell. Without music I am lucky if I can last ten minutes, but I can at the very least double that and push through if I have some good music playing in my ears.
Music During Workout Can Make You Work Harder
I am being serious here. A paper was written in 2010 that showed that people on exercise bikes who listened to fast paced music would cycle at a higher intensity than those who did not. Let’s face it we have all seen that person at the gym on the bike who is going ridiculously slow. Well if you struggle to get motivated to really push your shelf, put on some loud fast music and just go for it.
People Will Ignore You
I am a bit of a loaner in the gym, for me it’s time to work, but if someone stops to talk to me I am not going to be rude and just ignore them. But the truth is I hate it when people come and interrupt me and then stand talking for a good five minutes. The gym is time to work not time to talk. If you have headphones in though for the most part people will just shoot you a smile or wave and not stop to talk to you.
It Pumps You Up
Before I even hit the gym I will have my music on nice and loud to get me ready and pumped up for my workout. If I am in the car driving to the gym I will have the stereo blasting or if I am walking I just have my headphones in. Music is a great way to get your mind into “work out” mode before you even get into the gym.
You Get In The Zone
We all have that one song that makes us go hell yeah, let’s do this! Think of it like the Eye Of The Tiger Song in Rocky. We all have that one song that makes us just want to grab a set of dumbbells and pump iron. You will probably have more than a few songs that make you feel like kicking some serious butt in the gym so put them all into a playlist.
