Ok so today I have had a pretty brutal time in the gym. Not because of the punishing workout I have put myself through, but because of the way other people behave in the gym. Now I am not saying that I am better than anyone else and people should bow to me and accommodate me, but I make sure that when I am in the gym my workout and behavior does not affect anyone else’s time in the gym. Sadly many other people do not have proper gym etiquette. Here are a few things to take on board for next time you are in the gym.
Gym Etiquette : Clean Up After Yourself!
It blows my mind that some people think its fine to simply just dump their dumbbells on the floor after they have finished their set. Or if they are using a rack, bar, smith machine or whatever that it’s fine for them to just leave whatever weight plates they had on there. What makes people think this is ok? You should always return the weights you have been using to the rack or where ever it is your gym keeps them after use. The start of your workout should not have to be cleaning up after someone else!
Gym Etiquette: Other People Use The Gym Too
I love to do circuits at the gym, but not at peak time when a bunch of other people want to use the equipment as well. It’s really unfair to take over a whole section of the gym for yourself to do your circuit. If you must say use three or four sets of dumbbells for your workout then if you see someone clearly look for dumbbells ask them if they want to work in with you. Always be mindful of other people. If it looks like a person is waiting for you to get off a machine ask them if they want to work in with you.
Gym Etiquette: Wipe Off Your Sweat
Ugh, this one should go without saying, but far too many people sweat all over the machines or a bench and just wander off leaving it there for someone to touch or sit in. This is just disgusting and I do not care how busy you are. You have three seconds to give what you were using a wipe down. If you have forgotten your towel which I am sure we have all done on many occasions, go get some toilet tissue to carry round with you or even ask the gym if they have a towel you can borrow and that you will wash and bring back.
Gym Etiquette: Not Everyone Wants To Hear What You Have To Say
Why is it sometimes in the gym, people feel the need to talk to their gym buddy so that the rest of the gym can hear their conversation. This happens way more often than you would think, but the gym is a public place and not everyone wants to hear your “private” conversation with your gym buddy. This goes for those of you who need to talk on your cell phones at the top of your voice as well. If you need to take or make a call then go outside to do it!
Gym Etiquette: Do Not Interrupt A Set
There is nothing worse than when you are giving it your all trying to bust out those last few hammer curls or whatever and some inconsiderate person pops up to ask you something… can it really not wait until I have put the weights down? Never interrupt someone mid set, whatever you have to ask them can wait until they are in between sets.
