Starting to work out for the first time or maybe even after years and years of doing no exercise can be quite the daunting process. That first time you go through the gym’s door can in many ways feel like the first day of school. Even though they are not to you it can feel like everyone in the gym is looking at the “new kid” who does not belong there. I get these feelings, I really do, but they are not necessary at all and to help you new gym rats out, I have some general gym tips that are going to make your first few weeks working out so much easier.
Beginner In The Gym : Know Your Surroundings
One of the first things that should happen is a member of the gym staff should take your round give you a quick tour and show you what the various machines do. If this does not happen then ask them if they can give you a quick tour of the gym and show you what the equipment is.
Beginner In The Gym : Hygiene Is Important
You will sweat in the gym, that is what you are there for. But make sure you are not stinking before you even enter! Put some body spray on before your workout and then make sure you shower after.
Beginner In The Gym : Always Ask For Help
Do not just watch some random dude using the pec-dec and then think you know what to do. If you are ever unsure about any piece of gym equipment then ask a member of staff. There is nothing to be shy about that is what they are for and trust me they would rather you use the equipment properly than have you hurt yourself by not having a clue what you are doing.
Beginner In The Gym : Bring A Towel
You can buy a whole pack of towels for next to nothing these days so make sure you have a gym towel. This is so that you can wipe off your sweat from the machines after you have used them. Some gyms will have paper towel dispensers to save people bringing their own towels.
Beginner In The Gym : Bring A Water Bottle
If you are working hard enough then you will no doubt be getting very dehydrated. Make sure that you have a water bottle with you. Some people like to by expensive sports drinks, but this is not necessary. Just a regular bottle with tap water is good enough to stop you getting dehydrated during your workout.
Beginner In The Gym : The Right Workout Gear
You do not have to spend a ton of money on gym wear with Nike or Adidas logos on them. I would recommend that you get some light lose fitting clothing. Some people treat going to the gym as some kind of fashion show, you do not want to be one of these people. You are there to work out and what you are wearing should be comfortable first and fashionable second.
Beginner In The Gym : Get A Gym Buddy
If you are really worried and nervous about going to the gym then get a friend to go with you. You can then motivate each other and also have someone to talk to when you are on the treadmill. Having a gym buddy can make it seem far less intimidating, walking through that gym door for the first time.
