As a child of the 80’s if you ask me, we had the best kids movies ever! Sorry those of you who grew up in the 70’s or even those 90’s kids. The 1980’s had it down for great family friendly movies. Today I want to take a few moments to share with you some of my favorite movies that I watched as a kid and now I have enjoyed watching with my own children. If you are looking for a fun family movie night then check one of these gems of the 80’s out.
The Goonies (1985)
If there is a person alive who does not fall in love with the movie The Goonies, then I am sorry, but you have no soul! This is a classic of the 80’s and it still holds up incredibly well to this day. It’s about a group of kids led by Mikey who is having to leave town due to his house being sold, going on an adventure to find hidden pirate treasure. Along with Mikey’s older teenage brother and a few of his friends then end up on the run from the crime family The Fratellis while trying to find the treasure so that Mikey and his brother do not have to leave town. This is just a great movie and one that is perfect to sit down on the couch with your kids and show them a classic from years gone by.
The Monster Squad (1987)
Now here is a movie that would never get made in this day and age! I tell everyone who listens that they need to watch this movie! It’s about a group of kids who love to watch all the old classic monster movies. Frankenstein, The Wolfman, Creature From The Black Lagoon and so on. The trouble is all these monsters are real and Dracula is leading them to try and take over the world. Only this gang of kids…… The Monster Squad can take them down. Despite the horror subject matter this is a fun and family friendly movie that would make for a great movie night.
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
This is actually a Disney movie that is not as fondly remembered as it should be. It’s about a young kid who finds an alien space craft and when he boards it he goes on the adventure of a life time. When he comes back home however he finds that he has been gone for eight years, even though he has not aged at all. This is a wonderful movie that has a ton of heart and one I cannot recommend highly enough. It has that classic Disney charm so you know that this is a good one.
The Never Ending Story (1984)
They just do not make movies like this anymore… well, they do, but they are filled with CGI looking creature. The Never Ending Story is an 80’s classic and one that I am surprised has not been made. It’s about a young boy who finds an old book and upon reading the book he realizes that the land in the book Fantasia needs a hero to save it and he, as he reads, realizes that he is that hero. This is a great movie and one that is perfect for you and the kids.
The Land Before Time (1988)
While there has been a TV series and more movies released since the Don Bluth original, this is a true classic and somewhat forgotten animated gem of the 1980’s. The movie is about a little dinosaur called Littlefoot who loses his mother after she saves him from a T-Rex. Littlefoot then joins up with other kid dinosaurs to find the Great Valley, a place where dinosaurs can live and have plenty of food to eat. In many ways this is a coming of age story, just with dinosaurs as the characters.
