While some kids will brush their teeth morning and night without any kind of hassle, I am sure that there are some of you parents out there who have had a bit of a nightmare, battle and horrible time trying to get your child to brush their teeth. It’s a horrible way to start and end the day when you have an argument about brushing their teeth. I have had more than a few battles with my son over brushing his teeth, but we are at a stage where he does it (although he is still not thrilled) but at least he knows why it’s important. Here are some tips from one parent to another about getting your child to brush their teeth.
Have A Step Or Stool So They Can Reach The Sink
One thing that my son hated was how his face even on his tip toes would barely be above the sink. This was just one of his many complaints about brushing his teeth on a morning and an evening. And to be fair, brushing his teeth was already something he was not too happy about, so this was an extra annoyance to him. So use a booster step or even a stool that they can sit on their knees. This also lets them see what they are doing better.
Get A Fun Toothbrush
While that Colgate or… I cannot think of another brand name of tooth brush, sorry, may brush their teeth really good. To a kid it is just really boring. These days you can get toothbrushes with Spider-Man, Batman, Moshi Monsters, My Little Pony, SpongeBob and pretty much everything else in between. Heck I even saw a Transformers toothbrush that literally transformed! What an age we live in. Anyway let them pick the toothbrush that they think looks cool. At the very least it gets them more involved in the tooth brushing process and makes it more fun. In my case my son picked a Batman toothbrush and I told him that thanks to Batman his new toothbrush was more powerful.
Tasty And Fun Toothpaste
You get a whole range of fun flavored toothpaste for kids these days, bubble gum, strawberry and other such tasty toothpastes. Regular mint toothpaste is most of the times far too strong for kids and they are reluctant to keep it in their mouths for long. But with the tasty flavored toothpastes they are more likely to keep on brushing as they like the flavor. In sticking with the toothbrush theme, flavored toothpaste can also be bought with characters on it like Batman and SpongeBob.
Reward Good Brushing
I know that some parents are dead against bribery, but if your kid simply will not brush their teeth and getting them to do so is like world war 3, then have a tooth brushing chart. Where each time they brush their teeth properly and without a fuss they get a sticker. The way that I did it was if my son earned ten stickers he would get a small reward a book, a small toy or whatever.
